Oxygen Sensor
Why an Oxygen Sensor May Fail
  • As an oxygen sensor ages, contaminants from poor fuel quality or oil may accumulate on the sensing element, reducing its effectiveness
  • The oxygen sensor may also fail prematurely if contaminated by coolant leaks, certain silicone sprays, over-the-counter fuel additives or gasket sealers
Related Components to Check
  • Electrical connections to and from the oxygen sensor
  • Engine control computer
  • Catalytic converter
  • Distributor and distributor cap
  • Spark plugs
  • Vacuum leaks upstream of the oxygen sensor
  • Fuel injectors
  • Mass air flow sensor
  • Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
